The Monday Byte
LOC, critique of YouTuber, breaking up big PRs, and James Q. Quick
Welcome to the Monday Byte where I send you 5 things each week to help you speak English like a native speaker.
📖 Word/Phrase - LOC
Have you heard someone use LOC before? It stands for lines of code and is very commonly used among native English-speaking programmers.
It's only 100 LOC and it's a full-stack application. Can you believe that??
I deleted 50 LOC today. Felt soooo good.
Drop that in a conversation this week. Good to get the practice in.
💬 Pronunciation - Critique of YouTuber
My friend Dmitrii makes YouTube videos about being an expat in The Netherlands. He asked me to critique one of his videos so I did.
And if you watch towards the end, I explain why you want to reach his level or higher.
Want me to critique you next? Reply to this email and let me know!
🗣️ Real World Conversation - Do you know how to break up big PRs?
One practice you want to avoid as an engineer is raising PRs that are too big.
"But Joe, this is a big refactor. A big PR is envitable.”
Look, I hear you. But, when it can be broken down, you should know how to do it.
This came up on my team at work so I recorded a video to share 3 approaches for breaking code into smaller PRs.
🔗 Content - James Q Quick
Have you heard of James? He's a popular YouTuber in the JavaScript community. And he gets it.
He is really good at breaking down technical concepts and explaining them in simple terms. You're gonna like him. His videos cover frontend and backend JavaScript.
💪🏼 Exercise - Free feedback on you writing from natives
I stumbled on this during my own language learning journey last year and it’s as awesome as it sounds!
LangCorrect - a community of language learnings helping each other get better at writing. How it works:
sign up for free
write a short post
get corrections from natives
you correct others in your native language
It’s a wonderful place to get feedback on your writing for free. Seriously, check it out and let me know what you think.
Enjoy the week, we’ll talk again soon. And hey, remember, if you want a specific topic covered or need help, hit reply and let me know!
