The Monday Byte

Pronunciation tools for you

Welcome to the Monday Byte where I send you 5 things each week so you can improve your English and land a remote dev job.

đź“– Word/Phrase - JD

Maybe you know this one, or maybe this is just recruiter-lingo. But JD = “job description.” There are really two scenarios where you might use this:

  1. If you're helping with the hiring process at your company

  2. You're talking to a recruiter or hiring manager

I used this last week with a recruiter who reached out on LinkedIn:

Hi [recruiter]!

Sure, I'm happy to hear more. Feel free to send over a JD.

đź’¬ Pronunciation - Can Google Understand You?

Someone on Twitter told me about this last month. Google Meet as a closed captions (CC) feature which is available for free. You can turn it on per meeting and boom. It just works

So I want you to try this. Create a Google Meet → turn on CC → then tell me if it understands you well. If yes, this might be a gold nugget for improving your pronunciation…

🗣️ Real World Conversation - 2 Tips for Non-Technical Interviews

In case you forgot, I am actively looking for a new job. And so because of that, I'm paying super close attention to what's working and what's not working.

Why? I want a job but I also want to figure out the “hacks” so I can share them with you in this newsletter. Here are two which have been working really really well:

đź”— Content - Free Books for Developers

Shoutout to friend and English Byte community member Tony for sharing this with me. Last week, the freeCodeCamp shared a HUGE announcement — they're publishing books now!

Why is this huge? Because this means more resources for devs like you and me. I mean, one day they will have a computer science degree that is completely free.

This means they're one step closer. And they have over 60 books already!

💪🏼 Exercise - Record a Voice Message with Async

Do you send voice messages? I know they're super common in South America, at least with my Argentinian friends. It definitely feels less common in the US.

But, there is a great tool that you might start using now or even bring to your next team. It's called Async and it's awesome. It auto transcribes your message and even summarizes it!

Best part? There is a nice free plan!

Record your first message and then send me the link!

Bonus: The first 5 people to message me, I'll reply back with feedback or answer any question you have!

Enjoy the week, we’ll talk again soon.
